ALMANAC* (from Happy Birthday to U.S.)

SUBJECT AREAS: Language Arts, History, Science, Math, Art

OBJECTIVE: Students will examine almanac design and construct one of their own.

GRADE LEVEL: Adaptable for grades 4-10

MATERIALS: Almanacs, paper, pens, black markers

ACTIVITY:

 1. Students will examine an almanac. In colonial times, every family that could afford one bought an almanac. These all-purpose calendar books told them about the tides, the weather, changes of the moon, anniversaries of historical events, and gave lists of places to stay and descriptions of the roads. They gave forecasts of eclipses, days for fairs, recipes, jokes, health hints, and advice in the form of proverbs and sayings.

2. Then each student will, individually or in teams, collect proverbs and quotes that they like or will dream up their own. (Include important dates in their lives, events they'll be attending, amazing weather predictions, favorite jokes and recipes, sports information, etc.) .
