ICE CUBE RACE

TIME REQUIRED 25 minutes

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Several sheets of different colored construction  paper including black and white, a measuring cup, clear plastic bags, ice cubes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Student will learn how different colors absorb and reflect light. They will also learn how to take measurements and formulate conclusions from them.

INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the Ice Cube Race! In this experiment, you'll see which color will melt its ice cubes the fastest. Which color do you think it might be?

STEP 1: For this experiment, you'll need several sheets of construction
paper, including black and white, a measuring cup, clear plastic bags,
ice cubes, and a sunny day.

STEP 2: Spread your sheets of colored paper out flat in the direct sunlight.
Then, make an ice bag of each sheet by pacing five ice cubes into a plastic
bag. Place one ice bag on the sheets of paper.

STEP 3: Watch carefully as the race begins! Which color seems to be
winning? After fifteen or twenty minutes, the race is over and it's time to
find out which one is the winner.

STEP 4: Measure the water from each of the ice bags and chart the
information.

STEP 5: Based on your findings, which color melted the ice the fastest?
The answer may surprise you! Put the sheets of paper in order according
to the data you collected, from fastest to slowest. What would cause some
colors to melt their cubes faster than others? Now that you know which
colors are the hottest and which ones are the coolest, if it was a very
hot summer day and you wanted to dress to keep cool, what color should
you wear?
