WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. SUN? (Bedroom- Sundial)
TIME REQUIRED: 15 minutes setup. Several hours for results.
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Twelve inch cardboard square, twelve inch rod.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Student will learn how we can tell time by the sun because it moves across the sky.
INTRODUCTION: What time is it, Mr. Sun? The sun will gladly tell you what time it is, anytime of day! All you need to do is make a sundial!
STEP 1: Cut a twelve inch circle out of cardboard. Place the circle outside
in a sunny spot. Find a straight stick, pencil or rod and poke it through the center of the cardboard right into the ground. There should be eight inches showing.
STEP 2: There will be a shadow cast by the stick. Each hour, draw along the shadow with a pencil and mark it with the time of day. When you're finished, the, circle will be filled with lines of varying lengths. The
shortest one will be the noon shadow. Mark that one with an "N" for noon.
STEP 3: The "N" also stands for north. Each time you want to use your sundial point the "N" to the north. If you want to know the time, just look for the shadow!
