PLANTS NEED SUNLIGHT
TIME REQUIRED: Varies
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Plant, dandelion, large cup.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Children will learn plants need the sun to grow.
INTRODUCTION: Plants and the sun are good friends. In fact, plants will
go out of their way to face the sun. They will actually bend themselves just to touch the warm sunbeams that help them grow.
STEP 1: Place a house plant near a sunny window.
STEP 2: Check back on your plant a few hours later and see how it has
turned toward the sun!
STEP 3: Now turn the plant around, so that it is leaning away from the
window.
STEP 4: After several hours, the plant will have reached around toward
the window again, striving to soak up its beloved sunshine. How long did it take?
STEP 5: Now, go outside and find a dandelion that has a yellow top.
STEP 6: Place a cup or a bucket over it to hid it from the sun. Leave
it in that way for an hour.
STEP 7. Take the bucket off and -- What happened? The dandelion has
closed up and gone to bed! Without the sun it thinks it's nighttime.Leave the bucket off and keep an eye on your dandelion... I have a
feeling it's going to wake up again.
