DOGS

Dogs have been man's best friend for thousands of years.  Dogs love the company of people, especially children.  Dogs are ranked the fifth most intelligent among animals.  They have a keen sense of smell.

In the 1960's, about 25,000,000 dogs lived in the United States.  In World War II, 8.500 dogs were in the K-9 Corp of the United States.  The dogs helped find wounded soldiers on the battle field.

,

There are many kinds of dogs.  There about 40 different breeds of dogs.  Did you know that dogs were the first animals to be tamed by man?

Sporting dogs are dogs that hunt, like retrievers, spaniels, and pointers.  Hounds are the oldest known dog.  Working dogs are dogs that help people.  Terriers, toy dogs, non-sporting, and other breeds are also dogs.

The Body of a Dog.

Dogs range in all sizes from the Chihuahua to the Iris Wolfhound.  Some dogs have long coats, or as you can see in the pictures above,  some have short coats.  A dog has two coats.  The outer coat protects the dog from rain and snow.  The inner coat keeps the dog warm.  The dog sheds its coat in the summer and grows a new one in the fall.

Bones:

All dogs have the same number of bones, but different sizes.  Like cats, dogs have five claws on the front and four on the back.  The difference is dogs cannot pull their claws in, but cats can.

Nose:

Dogs recognize objects by smell as much as man recognizes things by sight.  Moisture helps them detect scent.

Mouth:

The mouth of a dog differs in the shape of its baud.  A puppy has 32 teeth.  An adult dog has 42 teeth, including 4 large teeth in the front.

Ears:

A dog can hear sounds 250 yards away.  Humans can only hear sounds 25 yards away.  Dogs can hear sounds 30,000 times a second.  Flaps protect the dog's ears.  Small dogs can hear better than large dogs.

Eyes:

Dogs cannot see as well as humans.  Dogs are color blind.  They can only see based on movement, rather than by brightness and  shapes.

Body Functions:

A dog's normal body temperature is 101 degrees Fahrenheit'.  A dog's heart beats between 20 and 120 beats a minute.  When a dog becomes overheated or excited, the dog starts to pant.  A dog's life span is 12 or 13 years.  A six month old puppy compares with a 6 year old boy.  The first two years of a dog's life compares with the first 24 years of a man's life.  And that is the story of dogs.
